the beach
If you’re looking for more than the natural beauty you’ll find on a drive through the County then head West from the Church to Sandbanks Provincial Park.
There are two beaches: Sandbanks beach and Dunes beach. Dunes is about 4km father into the park but its the worth the drive. Expect to find pristine white sand beaches and dunes (pictured above).
Wineries & breweries
The County boasts too many wineries to name. Three Dog Winery is an option that’s closer to the Church but the main wine region of the County is just a short drive west into Hillier. There you will find Hinterland, Casa-Dea, Rosehall Run, Hillier Creek, Sandbanks Estate Winery and many, many more.
Breweries are becoming more and more popular. Parson’s brewery is conveniently located just south of the Church on Highway 49 on your way into Picton. They’ve got a great patio and outdoor space suitable for kids. Some other favourites are the County Cider Company just south in Waupoos, and Midtown Brewery in Wellington.
Restaurants & Cafes
For breakfast or just a good coffee go to Lilly’s Cafe or The Vic Cafe, both are on Picton Main Street.
There are always new restaurants popping up in the County. Some new and noteworthy attractions are Seedlings and Flame + Smith in Bloomfield. If you’re looking for something more laid back and close to home then head to Hartley’s Tavern or County Canteen in Picton.
Lake on the Mountain is just south east of the Church and it is a worthwhile attraction on its own. You’ll see a beautiful view of Picton Bay from atop the mountain with a lake behind you. While you’re there be sure to check out The Inn restaurant or Miller House Cafe across the street.
Shopping & Antiques
Frugal & Company on Picton main street is a great place to start for antiques. There are plenty of other boutiques and shops along Picton Main Street but if you’re set on antiques then head west into the next town of Bloomfield to Dead People’s Stuff.
Continuing west through the County you’ll end up in Wellington, the home of the famous Drake Devonshire hotel and restaurant. There are plenty of places to stop in Wellington but make sure to make a stop at the The Parlour plant shop, you may find the best living souvenir from your visit.
